Note for:   Edmund Scott,   ABT 1541 - 1621         Index

Individual Note:
The notes show Edmund mother probably died during child birth given the year of her death (the same year as Edmunds birth). His father died 14 years later. I beleive Edmund was raised by a relative (George Scott) which accounts for so many records showing Edmund with 2 sets of parents.

Note for:   Sir Raulf Kempe,   1278 - 1313         Index

Individual Note:
Yes Radalphus Kemp (circa 1184-1200) married a woman now known as "De La Hants' which translated, means she was from the Hampshire area, not her surname.

Ralf did have William (abt 1228) who married a woman from the Barnstaple area of Devonshire, and they had two known boys Arnold (abt 1268) and William(abt 1270).

Ralf also had John (abt1305) who married Agnes ALDEN about 1324, they had Peter.

Ralf also had a third known son named Thomas (about 1309) who married 'unknown' and had one known daughter named Joan (abt.1335)

Ralf (aka Radalphus) Kempe, born De Campis in some documents. Died at the Battle Of Abbey, Sussex, England. Ralf was also known as Lord Birling. He obtained this title through family connections with the Bardolph family(look at the arms of his son Allan to find it was quartered by eight carrying the Bardolph crest), who married into the De Campis family, Bardolphs Hall is located in a peaceful, downland setting within the extensive grounds of Birling Manor.

Something most don't know is that Ralf had a brother named Roger (abt 1210-1229 Islington, Norfolk, England).

Another little known fact of Ralf De Campis' time is about the family line of Robert Champernon b.1050,Clyst, Devonshire, England. The Champernons became De Champernons, who in 1208 became De Campo Champernons, who in 1260 became Campo Kempe, who in 1295 became Kempe, who in 1507 became Kempe and some Camp. Some have spelled Champernons both without a 'W' and with, as in Champernownes. I am sure if you check in your medieval history of your Kempe's lineage you will find at least one or two Champernons listed..keep digging...you might be amazed. This is just one track I myself am on the hunt for through the Kempe's history. As Hitchin-Kempe states in his book "The theory that they were descendants of John Kempe, a Flemish weaver who settled in England under royal protection in 1313, is probably not true, because they were settled at Wye before that time."
(Sources: Type: Book
Author: Hitchin-Kemp, Frederick
Periodical: A General History of the Kemp and Kempe Families of Great Britain
Publication: London, Leadenhall Press, 1902)

As for Ralf father's name being Rogerus, I don't argue that either. Back during the medieval period I have found such instances where a male was born by either Roger or Robert and used the opposite name on various records ie: Rogerus could very well have been born a Robert and went by Rogerus and vice versa. Which makes me look with interest at the Champernon family line of his time.

One more thing that makes me wonder about the Rogerus/Robert
is two notations I found "By a legal settlement in Canterbury on 21 September 1227, Robert le Kempe was granted the tenancy of 5 acres of land at Holborough at a yearly rent of 12d., having acknowledged that the land belonged to William Potyn" in the archives of Britain. It was also stated he was of "Castle Rising, Norfolk".

Therefore, if one assumes this Rogerus/Robert could be the same, or related to the Robert Le Kemp of 1227, the Kempe's of Wye probably obtained the lands through Ralf during the Battle, or soon after, of the Battle of Hastings (due to his dieing in battle at Abbey in Sussex). This wouldn't mean they came from another country just before that...they could have come from Norfolk where there were Kempe's already residing during that period who had connections to the Archbishop Of York and were of Flemish/Prussian origin. And also keep in mind his son Allan married and moved his family to Norfolk, away from Wye.
